1. Describe the Trainee/Steward’s role for this phase

Trainee will learn to care for plants in the nursery. Trainee will assist in preparing beds, transplanting nursery starts, and spring plant care in fields.

2. Specific goals and objectives for this phase

Trainee will learn to pot up, water and care for nursery starts. Trainee will learn how to prepare beds for planing, transplant, stake and trellis field crops.

3. Primary Supervisor’s qualifications

Aleta Barrett, owner/nursery manager/business manager. 13 years farming experience.

4. What plans are in place for the Trainee/Steward to participate in cultural activities while in the United States?

Host farm will have gatherings with other local farms. Host farm will include trainee in a wide variety of family activities which may include softball, iceskating, soccer, parties and farming classes. Host farm will also introduce the trainee to other age appropriate groups and activities.

5. Specific knowledge, skills, or techniques to be learned during this phase?

Watering starts, potting up starts, installing drip irrigation, laying plastic mulch, transplanting, trellising.

6. How specifically will this knowledge, skills, or techniques be taught? Include methodology of training and chronology/syllabus.

Trainee will learn by verbal explanation and hands on participation of all activities to be learned.

7. How will the Trainee/Steward’s acquisition of new skills and competencies be measured?

Trainee will be observed closely as they are learning. They will be given instruction, reminders and corrections until they are able to perform tasks independently.

1. Describe the Trainee/Steward’s role for this phase

Trainee will participate in all aspects of growing and maintaining crops. Trainee will learn to harvest all crops grown on the farm. Trainee will participate in packing produce for retail sales and selling produce at farmers markets.

2. Specific goals and objectives for this phase

Trainee to become competent in the care and maintenance of all the crops grown on the farm. Trainee will be able to identify when crops are ready to be harvested and how to harvest them efficiently. Trainee will interact directly with customers and will learn how to sell produce effectively. Trainee will learn how to pack produce for sales to restaurants, grocery stores and wholesale distributers.

4. What plans are in place for the Trainee/Steward to participate in cultural activities while in the United States?

Trainee will have the option to choose to continue to participate in cultural activities they were introduced to during phase 1 and additional activities in the community.

5. Specific knowledge, skills, or techniques to be learned during this phase?

Field Skills: Trellising, staking, basket weaving, pruning.
Harvesting Skills: Harvesting over 20 different crops efficiently, meeting harvest goals based on time and value of crops grown, packing crops for sale.
Marketing Skills: Selling produce at farmers markets, communicating with customers about the produce, meeting sales goals.

6. How specifically will this knowledge, skills, or techniques be taught? Include methodology of training and chronology/syllabus.

Hands on training of every task with a supervisor or experienced employee. Group discussions with the owners and crew regarding plant care, harvest times, crop values, efficiency, sales goals, use of produce, customer service.

7. How will the Trainee/Steward’s acquisition of new skills and competencies be measured?

By the end of the phase 2 training period trainee should be competent to perform all the learned activities without assistance or correction.

Trainee will assist in fall harvest, bed clean up, planting cover crop and preparation for winter

2. Specific goals and objectives for this phase

Learn what needs to be done and how to do it to prepare the farm for winter

3. Primary Supervisor’s qualifications

Ken Barrett, Owner, Operations Manager

4. What plans are in place for the Trainee/Steward to participate in cultural activities while in the United States?

Trainee will be invited to spend Halloween and Thanksgiving with the host farm. Trainee will be encouraged to continue to gather with friends and participate in activities of their interest.

5. Specific knowledge, skills, or techniques to be learned during this phase?

Clearing vegetation, seeding cover crop, using silage tarps, disassembling cold frames and tunnels, final gleaning of crops. Year end evaluation of farm profits/losses.

6. How specifically will this knowledge, skills, or techniques be taught? Include methodology of training and chronology/syllabus.

Following an annual schedule of fall activities. Hands on training with supervisors and experienced employees.

7. How will the Trainee/Steward’s acquisition of new skills and competencies be measured?

Observation by supervisor of competency. They will also have a thorough understanding of the business workings and finances of the farm.
