1. Describe the Trainee/Steward’s role for this phase

This phase will include an orientation to the farm, safety trainings, overview of the farm management system and expectations for the trainee. Training schedules and further educational opportunities will be discussed and planned and the trainee will begin hands on learning.

2. Specific goals and objectives for this phase

Learn general procedures for plant production and animal care. Be able to plan and facilitate plant propagation, seeding, and transplant production. Learn orchard pruning and care. Understand the marketing plan for the season and help to implement any changes.

3. Primary Supervisor’s qualifications

Christopher Coulter–Owner operator of the farm for 20 years. Graduate degree in Agriculture and experience training agricultural students.

4. What plans are in place for the Trainee/Steward to participate in cultural activities while in the United States?

There are plans to allow the trainee to participate in area cultural activities outside of the farm context such as educational events, sports activities. and other entertainment as desired. Travel to local and regional venues will be provided.

5. Specific knowledge, skills, or techniques to be learned during this phase?

Greenhouse production, seed inventory and varietal selection, planning of production schedules, soil preparation theory, marketing techniques, equipment care and maintenance, orchard pruning, and property management design.

6. How specifically will this knowledge, skills, or techniques be taught? Include methodology of training and chronology/syllabus.

Hands on demonstrations, written instructions, assignment of additional reading/video training materials as needed.

7. How will the Trainee/Steward’s acquisition of new skills and competencies be measured?

Periodic evaluations of skills learned and retraining of any deficits. Facilitation of self-evaluation and revisiting of goals as the trainee moves through the training period. Including feedback from the trainee to adjust training schedule to meet their desired outcomes.

Learn produce safety and handling standards as well as Standard Operating Procedures for harvest. Participate in the all aspects of vegetable and fruit production and marketing.

2. Specific goals and objectives for this phase

Be able to understand and explain most aspects of sustainable vegetable production and marketing.

3. Primary Supervisor’s qualifications

Christopher Coulter–Owner operator of the farm for 20 years. Graduate degree in Agriculture and experience training agricultural students.

4. What plans are in place for the Trainee/Steward to participate in cultural activities while in the United States?

There are plans to allow the trainee to participate in area cultural activities outside of the farm context such as educational events, sports activities. and other entertainment as desired. Opportunities to travel to off-site activities will be provided.

5. Specific knowledge, skills, or techniques to be learned during this phase?

Learn how to safely harvest and pack fresh produce. Learn production techniques for various crops. Understand pest control issues for crops. Learn to maintain soil fertility and best practices for sustainable agriculture. Time management and scheduling. Irrigation systems and maintenance.

6. How specifically will this knowledge, skills, or techniques be taught? Include methodology of training and chronology/syllabus.

Hands on demonstrations will be used as well as written instructions, and the assignment of additional reading/video training materials as needed.
