1. Describe the Trainee/Steward’s role for this phase

The first month will focus on getting familiar with the layout of operations, learning their way around the community and developing a routine. Weekly work will be basic manual labor with the rabbits, chickens, pigeons assisting with feeding of the pigs, goats, sheep, etc and possibly some work in the garden depending on the time of year. Visit the Farmers Market and explore the sales and business aspects of selling ranch products

Become familiar with the farm operation from production through sales
Become familiar with the different species of animals
Become familiar with the crops
Assessment of basic and specialized skills needed to continue
Become familiar with the community and surrounding areas

In this phase of the training, the skills learned should be as follows:
How to be comfortable in this new situation
How to observe and ask questions
How to discuss and exchange ideas

During this first month Steward will be accompanied
by a DGR staff member or owner while at work.
Training will be hands on and by observation.

1. Describe the Trainee/Steward’s role for this phase

Phase two will encompass an 8 month period that will focus on increasing exposure
to and practicing new skills, new farming practices, Sales, marketing and farm business activities, visiting other farms to broaden experiences and ideas.
The trainee will be responsible for the development of materials and ideas to take home.
Over the course of this phase, the trainee may choose a primary focus and refine the training to support this focus.

Develop competence with weekly marketing and sales
Develop competence with interpreting business monitoring reports
Develop competence in handling different species of animals, understanding behavior and management needs of different species.
Develop competence in basic veterinary care.

Year round daily
Rabbit breeding, weaning, monitoring kindling, feeding, selecting, monitoring and managing herd health.
Chicken (Bresse and Poussin) monitoring egg incubation and chicks, feeding, cleaning, selecting, monitoring and managing breeding flock health
Pigeons monitoring egg hatching and chicks, feeding, cleaning, selecting, monitoring and managing breeding flock health
Assist with pig and sheep activities as needed for vaccinating, worming, feeding, recording data. Managing pigs, farrowing, weaning, breeding, etc.
Visit other farming operations.
Weekly:

Seasonal:
Spring-Planting garden, farm clean up, breeding Livestock guardian dogs and raising puppies, worming and vaccinating animals, possibly shearing sheep.

Primary role for the trainee will be to help introduce the new trainee to the farm activities

2. Specific goals and objectives for this phase

Trainee will be able to determine is an animal is sick, how to approach a diagnosis and set up a treatment plan.
Farm business management
Trainee will have a basic knowledge of farm management and how it is evaluated; the role of the soil, soil management, crop integration with animal management, and waste management, food salvaging and animal feed production.
Trainee will learn the basics product sales, wholesale and retail, how to set up farmers market booth and sell products

The trainee will focus on transferring knowledge to the next generation of trainees or new employees

The trainee will work with the new trainee following along. Observation and hands on practice of skills will be practiced under the observation of the owners.

Skills will be measured by how well the new trainee understands the basic ideas of how the farm is run. Evaluation will be done by the owners.

Develop an implementation plan, budget and proposal for the project.
Create a fundraising program for the project and implement it with the support of the Devil’s Gulch Ranch community
