1. Describe the Trainee/Steward’s role for this phase

Orientation to farm, and begin training in all aspects of farm management, including vegetable garden, greenhouses,n nursery, composting, orchard and chicken house. 1. introduction to methods of vegetable production including seed sewing, nursery care of seedlings, transplanting, bed preparation, transplanting, fertilizing, insect and disease control, harvest, post harvest procedures and marketing. Trainee will learn application of soil improvement techniques including application of compost and beneficial organisms to the nursery and field production area. Continuing of composting as waste is generated. Assist in value added operations including drying/ dehydration, and marketing at the Hawi Farmers Market weekly.

2. Specific goals and objectives for this phase

Familiarize Trainee with all phases of normal farm operation to maintain ongoing production of all crops thru fetilization and with disease and insect controls. Continue soil improvement program of adding compost to greenhouse and garden beds and mulching of trees, continue bedding material management in the chicken house.

4. What plans are in place for the Trainee/Steward to participate in cultural activities while in the United States?

The local Hawi Farmers Market is a forum for selling produce and connecting farmers, producers and the local agricultural community. A wide variety of vendors attend the market and offer a diverse mix of backgrounds, cultures and life experiences. The market is sponsored by the Hawaiii Farmers Union, which offers a wide variety of programs at its meetings involving invited speakers on a wide variety of farming related subjects. There is also a series of agricultural festivals held on island through the year, including a Mango festival, Avocado festival, and other forums to bring the agricultural community together. Visits to other farms and various farmers markets in the area will be included in the training to allow the trainee to meet people and view other farms operating systems

5. Specific knowledge, skills, or techniques to be learned during this phase?

Trainee will learn how to use natural soil amendments to increase production prepare and use amendments to increase soil fertility
manage insects and diseases through application of biological regulators, monitor insects and disease, rotate crops to minimize insects and disease

Trainee will practice the techniques ices and skills closely with and under the supervision of farm manager to learnable the skills and techniques in a hands on manner. trainee with be guided to watch, and then copy and practice the correct techniques, Trainees will have a formal interview with manager where trainee will be evaluated monthly or more frequently if necessary to determine if trainee has learned and is applying the techniques properly, or whether additional training is required in and particular skill area.

3. Primary Supervisor’s qualifications

manager has a college level degree in accounting and 30 years of business management and accounting experience. Manager has developed and taught custom record keeping systems in many businesses.

1. Describe the Trainee/Steward’s role for this phase

Trainee will further refine and develop the basic operation skills to maintain farm production, record keeping and maintenance

2. Specific goals and objectives for this phase

Trainee will learn to summarize, review and evaluate farm financial records related to income and expenses
Trainee will learn food processing techniques for value added products produced on farm
Trainee will learn construction techniques related to building structures as required by the farm
Trainee will learn greenhouse management of insects, diseases, soil mixes and irrigation to enhance production

3. Primary Supervisor’s qualifications

Farm Manager a 4 year business college degree and experience in preparing and evaluating financial statements. Manager has managed greenhouse production for 7 years.The manager has also developed and produced value added products like juices, gelato and baked goods using farm produce for the LotusCafe, a successful restaurant previously operated by the Farm manager and family.

Learn safe operation of tools involved with farm construction projects
