1. Describe the Trainee/Steward’s role for this phase |
Trainee will train alongside the current garden team to improve team efficiency, communication, and over all work flow on a daily basis. We will be getting our garden ready for new crops and fresh beds! |
2. Specific goals and objectives for this phase |
Weeding, filling new seed boxes for seed saving, flatting new plants, pricking out/potting up, bed preparation, early harvest, garden systems implemented, studying/research. |
3. Primary Supervisor’s qualifications |
Trainee will do these tasks with the tutelage and supervision of Intern Manager Kayla, who will be working with them. Kayla is a member of the ranch, garden team and is the lead of the intern program. |
4. What plans are in place for the Trainee/Steward to participate in cultural activities while in the United States? |
Community dinners at Golden Rule. Occasional trips to other areas (e.g. Solar Living Institute, Pacific Ocean coast, northern California Redwood groves, events in Willits, California). May attend any local church and its events. The steward is given at least one week vacation as well as 3 3-day weekends. The steward will have access to many workshops and local celebrations. (4th of July, Memorial day picnic, concerts in the park, etc. |
5. Specific knowledge, skills, or techniques to be learned during this phase? |
Seeding of plants (in flats), bed prep and garden prep, soil fertility, maintaining of plants in flats while germinating, harvesting, building, systems management,composting, compost teas, bio-intensive methods, biodynamic methods and more. |
6. How specifically will this knowledge, skills, or techniques be taught? Include methodology of training and chronology/syllabus. |
On site work in the garden with Kayla, dimitri, ellen and garden team that follows a week by week schedule of plant management. Will be met also with weekly check in meetings to ensure that information is being conveyed and taught which ever way is best for the steward. |
7. How will the Trainee/Steward’s acquisition of new skills and competencies be measured? |
Trainee will do these tasks with the tutelage and supervision of Kayla and garden team. Acquisition of skills will be measured with weekly checkins and close monitoring of the steward, farm, garden team, and crops. |
8. Additional Phase Remarks (optional) |
Trainee will be exposed to many examples of pedal power for seed cleaning, threshing, winnowing and milling grains. Water catchment is explored, carbon sequestration in the soil is taught. Seed saving and growing is a focus. We have alternative building workshops available as an option. |

During this phase we are going to be focusing on getting our spring/summer crops in the ground and ready to go. Transplanting, weeding, irrigation, deconstruction/construction of compost piles, fruit tree thinning, bed turn over. |

Trainee will do these tasks with the tutelage and supervision of Intern Manager Kayla, who will be working with them. Kayla is a member of the ranch, garden team and is the lead of the intern program. |
