This placement is owned and operated by a family.
Production Acreage : #20
Number of Full-time Employees: 2
Number and Type of livestock : sheep(4-6), dairy goats(3-7), Pigs (3)and chickens(20-30).
My farm/organization is : Certified Organic, Pesticide Free
I am an active member of Valley Organic Growers Association, Organic Consumers Association, Organic Farming Research Foundation, Association of Specialty Cut Flower Growers, Colorado Organic Producers Association.
Educational Activities :
We provide on farm education in a hands on learning style. We expect the steward to be curious and ask questions, keep notes etc if interested. We work on a a give and take basis, meaning the more learning the steward desires and shows interest for the more we will go to extra lengths to provide study, assignments, and provide leadership.
There is a tour of farms organized by the farmers for the interns in the area, where a good diversity of farms are visited. There is also a Intern Education Program through VOGA, where interns go to other farms and each month for an evening lecture about specific topics and farm tours. We also provide access to our vast library of agricultural books, magazines and industry papers.
Social Environment:
WE have a tight knit family, a daughter 14 and son 11. We do lots of activities with them, and they help on the farm when they are not in school. We do enjoy our privacy for family time but love sharing with our interns meals from time to time or special events, parties etc.
We live in a unique small town. There are people here of all types, farmers, ranchers, artists, coal miners, many different types of people. There is an active art center, movie theater, a local solar organization, and a regional newpaper and public radio station.

Training Expectations :

We offer Seasonal training, ideally between April and November.

On-Site Training, Steward's primary activities :

planting, harvesting, weeding, mulching, marketing, post harvest handling, feeding animals, milking, cheese making, depending on skills and interest, looking for someone who is dedicated to the cut flowers as a specific area of interest.

Climate and Location Description

Average temperature/Typical weather: Typical summer weather is hot(85-100F) and dry with cooler nights (45-60F), only occasional rains. In the fall and spring it is cold and can snow with temperatures at night form 20-35F and daytime 45-65F, so the weather here is variable.
Proximity to nearest town/city: 7-10min
Geographic Location:
We are in a high desert. But we have irrigation water too so we are surrounded my many pastures and hay fields. We look up into the mountains and are at about 5600' elevation. Close by are several rivers many places to hike, wilderness areas and the Black Canyon of the Gunnison.

$1000/ month, $200 / month, Transportation from/to nearest int\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'l airport and placement

Lodging is Simple, with basic amenities (heat, indoor bathroom).
Housing is onsite.
Amenities :
Only a wood stove for heat, Free, daily internet on-site, Occasional, local use of insured vehicle on days off, with host permission(Only for stewards with valid home country drivers' licenses or Int'l Drivers Permits), Bicycle for excursions to nearby shops/town/public transit (less than 3 miles one-way), Food provided by host to cook your own meals(shared with host and other interns), Full or partial food allowance added to monthly MESA stipend to buy/prepare own meals, Free, seasonal farm products. (Example: some meat mostly lamb and goat, goat milk and cheese, vegetables as they are available)
