MESA Notes - Public
This MESA Host is participating in "SPRIG", a grant program supported by MESA to reduce the farm's Hosting fees. Stewards who join Lockewood Acres are expected to collaborate on a project of mutual interest and benefit to the farm and Steward. SPRIG projects are intended to support educational enrichment of the Steward's training experience and build upon the mentoring capacity of the Host.

About the Placement:
Detailed Placement Description
This placement is owned and operated by a family.
Production Acreage : 10 acres
Number and Type of livestock: 3 Swine, 7 goats, 5 sheep, chickens and possible 1 beef cattle
At the height of our season, we host and/or employ: 1part-time employees, 2 international interns or apprentices (non-MESA)
My farm/organization is Certified Organic, Pesticide Free with a dash of bio-dynamic influence.
I have participated in training exchange or apprenticeship program called WWOOF, it has been great. We have met people from all over the world, they just don't stay that long.
We are active members of Farms Reach, CAFF, CCOF, Solano Grown, Sustainable Solano, Westin Price Foundation, Visit Vacaville, and the Farmers Guild.
Educational Activities :
Everyday life on the farm is extremely educating. I learn something new everyday! We have books, notes, field trips and current magazines on the topic of farming and organic agriculture. We also attend any agriculture functions from the World Ag Expo in Tulare to Eco Farm in Pacific Grove funds permitting.
Social Environment :
It is just my wife and I here on the farm. We have a daughter that lives in Sacramento with 8 year old grandson that visits from time to time. We currently host three events on the farm in April (Meet the Kids), May (Spring Fling) and June (Fun on the Farm).

About the Internship:
Full for the Season
40 plus or minus hours over 6 days . Sunday is our day of rest.
Training Expectations :
We offer Year-round training. Our farm/organization strongly prefers a steward who is able to lift 75#s, plus a willingness to learn.
On-Site Training, Steward's primary activities :
seeding in greenhouse,planting of starts, prepping soil, weeding, feeding of animals, animal health care, milking, making cheese, picking of produce and fruit, construction projects ( hoophouse, solar, well drilling, shed building, portable chicken house just to name a few and everyday projects. The steward will participate in Farmers Markets and on site sales.
Climate and Location Description
Average temperature/Typical weather: Californian (the worlds best place to be for agriculture) Winter is wet and cold ( near freezing) and the summer can be as hot as 115F. That is when we jump in the irrigation ditch!
Proximity to nearest town/city: half way between San Francisco and Sacramento.
We are in the middle of everything for northern CA. We encourage people to see Yosemite, go wine tasting, see gold country, the state capital and of course San Francisco.
$630/month, Personal Sleeping area with shared facilities, Free, daily food, Health insurance, local Transportation from/to nearest int'l airport and placement
Accommodations and amenities provided :
Trailer/Cabin will be shared with Other interns/stewards. Bedroom is private and bathroom is shared.
Lodging is Simple, with basic amenities (heat, indoor bathroom.
Electric or gas heat, Free, daily internet on-site, Food provided by host to cook your own meals(shared with host and other interns), Free, seasonal farm products (Example: what ever is grown on the farm)
