Detailed Placement Description

Starbright Acres Family Farm produces certified organic nutritious, delicious, planet friendly food for our local community. Ken & Aleta Barrett and their two children founded Starbright Acres Family Farm in 2010 with the concept of growing a commercially and financially viable quantity of produce in a semi-urban setting. They now sell over $100,000 of certified organic produce per acre in cultivation. 90% is sold within 10 miles of the farm. Starbright Farm also supports our local food network by hosting field trips, getting involved with local schools & agricultural programs, selling vegetable starts, and sharing farming knowledge with community members. Nutritious, delicious, planet friendly food – Eat right at Starbright!
There will be two other full time employees, two full time owners and various part time or temporary laborers working on the farm. We are an inclusive, liberal, democratic group and support the hiring of diverse folks. Our family includes people who are LGBTQIA+.

Training Expectations :

Starbright employees are passionate about farming and eager to participate in the hard work and joy of growing food for our community. All positions will share in all farm work duties and will have the opportunity to work on a wide variety of farming tasks including but not limited to bed prep., seeding, propagating starts, potting up, transplanting, weeding, trellising, harvesting, washing, packing and selling over 30 crop varieties. Team members must be reliable, timely, and willing to commit for at least one full season. Starbright employees exhibit a positive attitude, hard work ethic and team mentality. Must be able to be outside for long, hard days in both hot sun and wet cold while bending, lifting, carrying loads of more than 50#, kneeling and walking for extended periods of time. Trainees will participate in selling at farmers markets and will learn to calculate numbers, make change quickly and enjoy providing excellent customer service.
During high seasons or busy days, the team will be expected to participate until the job is done. Exact workdays and times vary seasonally and are often decided by the crew. Farm work days are generally Monday-Friday plus two Saturdays per month.

On-Site Training, Steward’s primary activities :

The farm owners will work directly with the intern and crew on all aspect of farming. Additionally there is a strong focus on sharing the numbers behind the business of running a farm.

Climate and Location Description

June-September climate is sunny with average daytime summer temperatures of 85 degrees fahrenheit but can also get quite hot in July and August. Nights are cooler and pleasant around 55 degrees. In the spring and fall daytime temperatures are around 50-70 degrees and nights can be colder at 35-50 degrees. There are sometimes hazardous air quality conditions due to wildfire smoke in the summer. Semi-urban, not great public transportation, nearest bus stop is approximately one mile away and does not run on the weekends. The home farm site is located 2 miles (45-60 minute walk) from downtown Grass Valley where there are plenty of activities, shopping, etc.

Compensation :

Onsite RV Trailer, $300 per month + unlimited farm produce, Sierra Harvest offers local classes and farmer training which may be part of the internship if steward wishes
