Detailed Placement Description

Pro Farm Group (formerly Marrone Bio Innovations) is an industry leader in discovering, developing and marketing environmentally friendly and scientifically sound pest control products for agriculture. Our greenhouse facility regularly produces a wide variety of crops and some weed species for regular R&D use. Wilson will have a chance to learn first-hand about the next generation of crop protection products. The Plant Science team is diverse, dynamic and mutually supportive. Davis is a nice city and is a hub for agricultural research.

About the Internship

Training Hours:

~40 hours per week

Training Expectations :

Supervision will be provided by Lucho Boddy. Steward will be trained in lab and greenhouse safety as well as some general lab documentation and operations procedures. We expect 40 hours a week, including possibly 1-2 hours on the weekends; otherwise, hours of work will correspond to regular office hours, starting the day at 8 AM.

On-Site Training, Steward’s primary activities :

Steward will be trained in general greenhouse operations and upkeep, as well as in the use of gravimetric and imaging-based phenotyping equipment for plant-based bioassays involving biostimulants and biopesticides. He will initially be assigned a weekly bioassay to conduct, for which he will be trained in experimental set-up, preparation of plant material, preparation of test substances, application of treatments using a research track sprayer, evaluation of results and preparation of data. Depending on how this goes, we add further training in experimental activities and techniques.

Climate and Location Description

Urban, college town. Weather can range from 32 degrees to 100+ degrees, depending on time of year. Davis is dry in the summer, rainy season in the winter. Public transportation (local bus, Amtrak train) is available in the Davis area. Within driving distance to Sacramento, Oakland, San Francisco/bay area and Tahoe/Reno.

Accommodations and amenities provided :

No housing offered, just monthly stipend reimbursement noted above; laptop or desktop if necessary, for work use. No vehicle for personal use.
