About the Placement:

Detailed Placement Description

Fickle Creek Farm is a diversified 235 acre farm in the North Carolina Piedmont, 25 minutes west of Chapel Hill & Durham. Pastured livestock includes ~40 Katahdin ewe sheep flock + offspring, 25 Angus-Senepol brood cows + offspring, 9 Duroc / Yorkshire / Berkshire sows + offspring, batches of ~700 meat chickens, ~1200 laying hens, and seasonal turkeys. We also grow ~3 acres of vegetables, including 3 large and 2 small hoop houses. A small farmstay accommodation allows visitors to better understand of sustainable farming practices. We also provide farm tours to all types of groups. Farm products are sold directly to consumers through 3 farmers markets and an on farm store, as well as wholesale to restaurants. English, Spanish, French, KiLuba, & Hebrew spoken to varying degrees.

About the Internship

Training Hours:

Up to 40 to 45 hours per week initial training followed by independent experiential learning opportunities

Training Expectations :

Typical work week is Tuesday through Saturday 8.30 to 5 p. Schedule may vary to provide rotating weekends off.

On-Site Training, Steward’s primary activities :

Livestock and vegetable production directly marketed to consumers.

Climate and Location Description

A great place to be near well known universities and vibrant urban areas. Spring and Fall are great times of the year. Summers can be hot and humid, and winter might have 3 to 5 snow events. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 32°F to 88°F and is rarely below 19°F or above 94°F. We are peri-urban with no public transportation to the farm. Some public transportation available in Mebane and Hillsborough, 15 minutes from farm.

Compensation :

at least $600 per month for individuals with some farming experience, Accomodation 1 mile from main farm, Unmarketable produce and eggs; discounted meats

Accommodations and amenities provided :

Housing provided in 2 bedroom 2 bath accommodation 1 mile from main farm. Washing machine, dryer available.
