About the Placement:

Detailed Placement Description

The Dakota Lakes Research Farm is a facility owned by a not-for-profit corporation created and operated by South Dakota farmers. It works closely with South Dakota State University to develop farming systems that are diverse and environmentally responsible. This provides a unique opportunity to work at every level of the system from basic research to commercial operations. Dakota Lakes is internationally recognized as a leader in the development of no-till farming systems for arid and semi-arid regions as well as for irrigated applications.

About the Internship

Training Hours:

30 to 40 hours/week

Training Expectations :

The schedule would vary with the activities. It would roughly entail a 5 day week. Overall supervision will be provided by Dr. Beck. The steward would spend time with commercial farmers, implement dealers, and at the Dakota Lakes Research Farm.

On-Site Training, Steward’s primary activities :

The Steward will participate in most activities common for the area and time of year. This includes machine maintenance, harvesting activity, soil sampling, and data analysis.

Climate and Location Description

Central SD is very rural. October and early November weather is pleasant. Late November and December can be cold. Appropriate clothing will be provided.

Compensation :

$600/month, This could be a combination of lodging at an extended stay hotel and hosting by individual families, A standard per deim food allowance will be provided

In addition to those listed previously access to computers and high-speed internet will be available most places.
