About the Placement:

Detailed Placement Description

Taproot Farm is a thriving Organic farm that serves the cities of Philadelphia and New York and their local community. Taproot produces high quality produce using efficient tools and practices. We work in a group environment to maintain our high productivity over 25 acres of produces and 15 acres of cover crops. We also manage an acre of blueberries. At Taproot we are committed to building the local, organic food system and feel that our young business is a healthy model for aspiring farmers to learn from. Staff share in social activities during the farm season and feel a strong sense of comradery.

About the Internship

Training Hours:

40 hours

Training Expectations :

Stewards will learn crop establishment, maintenance, harvest and post-harvest handling techniques. Stewards will work with host farmers to perform farm activities. We offer work at least 5 days a week.

On-Site Training, Steward’s primary activities :

The stewards will participate in the following:
Greenhouse work
High Tunnel Work
Crop Sowing and Transplanting
Crop Maintenance such as irrigation, pruning, trellising, fertilizing, pest and weed control
Harvest for our CSA, farmers’ markets and wholesale orders
Wash and pack harvest
Egg collection and packaging
Pasture maintenance and rotation

Climate and Location Description

Our climate is temperate with mild and wet springs, hot summers and cool autumns. We are located near the city of Reading and are within 2 hours of Philadelphia and New York City. There is plenty of transportation options for travel.

Compensation :

12.50, Farm Produce and Eggs

Accommodations and amenities provided :

Steward to pay $300/month rent for shared intern housing. We have a large house with 5 bedrooms for our interns. There is WiFi in the house and it is located close to stores. Interns have use of a farm vehicle for local travel.
