1. Describe the Trainee/Steward’s role for this phase

To become familiar with planting, cultivating, propagation and temperature control on the farm.

2. Specific goals and objectives for this phase

Stewards will have a basic understanding of how to:
Make compost
Prepare topsoil/primary tillage for vegetables
Prepare seed bed/secondary tillage for vegetables
Make special soil mixes
Transplant and direct seed vegetables
Propogate and graft vegetables
Utilize proper techniques/safety for hand tools for vegetables
How to engage the community on a farm
Large tool safety orientation
Control temperatures of greenhouses and manage season extension techniques

3. Primary Supervisor’s qualifications

Audrey Tehan founded the Seed to Table program in 2013. Audrey was born and raised in Sisters and comes from a family of ranchers and farmers. Growing food using practices that sustain both our natural resources and our community have always been an important aspect of Audrey’s life. After high school, she worked on multiple organic farms in the US and abroad. She graduated from Southern Oregon University with a degree in Environmental Studies, focusing on Politics and Conservation Biology. Audrey has been training interns for the past seven years on Seed to Table Farm. Interns/ stewards have gone on to manage small farms, community gardening programs, non profits and many more organizations.

Inolving kids in education beyond the classroom has also been at the forefront of Audrey’s focus as she has worked with kids and adults in experiential education for the past 12 years. Audrey’s studies and farming experiences reinforced her belief that being involved in growing food can be a pathway to living long, healthy lives and connecting with those around us. Audrey is passionate about the Sisters community and has had a life long aspiration to start the Seed to Table Farm in Sisters. She is excited to be serving her community in this way, and looks forward to connecting with you across a row of veggies in the garden!

4. What plans are in place for the Trainee/Steward to participate in cultural activities while in the United States?

Family dinner will be held once a week to help incorporate the stewards into the family life of the owners of Seed to Table Farm. Weekly opportunities will be available for the steward to join the farm crew in music and dance held a 10-minute bike ride from the farm in the local town. The Sisters Rodeo is held the second weekend in June and the steward will be given tickets to attend with the farm staff.

Introduction to Horticulture (April 23rd).
Animal Husbandry ( May 6th)
Weed Management (May 18th)
Greenhouse and Propagation (May 30st)

7. How will the Trainee/Steward’s acquisition of new skills and competencies be measured?

We have a comprehensive training manual and skill assessment worksheet. Skill assessment will be completed at the end of each phase.

Safe washing and handling techniques
Test soils and determine fertility needs for vegetables
Keep records for vegetables
Apply accurate supplemental fertilizer for vegetables
Pollinating for vegetables and greenhouse
Assist in marketing and sales of vegetables
Assist in transportation/distribution for vegetables
Develop community outreach strategies
