1. Describe the Trainee/Steward’s role for this phase

The steward will familiarize them self with the standard, principles and practices of our farm. We will guide the steward in our methods of production planning, seeding, transplanting, plant nutrition and harvest. We will be in full planting and seeding mode as the steward arrives and they will play an active role in planting the crops that will grow throughout the summer season. The steward will participate in harvest and will attend the farmers markets and farm stand with one of the supervisors.

2. Specific goals and objectives for this phase

Orient the steward with the principles and practices of our farm. Introduce and begin to train the steward in the most efficient ways to plant, seed, weed, harvest and process our produce, fruit and cut flowers.

3. Primary Supervisor’s qualifications

Both of the co-owners have owned and operated this farm for five years. Prior to owning this farm one of the co-owners (Hunter) worked as a staff member for Ecology Action for two years teaching small-scale intensive agriculture. Isabel (the other co-owner) was an intern with Ecology Action in 2013 and then went on to create garden projects in Mexico to reduce violence.

4. What plans are in place for the Trainee/Steward to participate in cultural activities while in the United States?

Northern California is a beautiful and diverse area. We are surrounded by a very active community which organizes many events on a vast array of topics, from square dancing to environmental and social activism. There will be opportinuty to explore the local ecosystem and visit and learn from neighboring farms.

5. Specific knowledge, skills, or techniques to be learned during this phase?

We will place a large emphasize in this phase on efficient ways to plant, seed, weed, harvest and process our produce, fruit and cut flowers. The importance of using the proper tool at the right time. Experience on small scale farming tools such as the greens harvester, the bcs tractor, the paper pot transplanter, the tilther, among others. The steward will learn the importance of season extension and usage of large machinery as well.

6. How specifically will this knowledge, skills, or techniques be taught? Include methodology of training and chronology/syllabus.

The first phase will include a combination of walking tours, lectures, observation sessions and in-field work. We have three books that we will use as a guide for outlining our philosophy and strategy. These books should be read in the first month of arriving and throughout the month we will review key areas with the steward. The steward will work side by side with both of the supervisors throughout this time and will develop their understanding of our practices through guided trial and error.

7. How will the Trainee/Steward’s acquisition of new skills and competencies be measured?

We have a large meeting every Monday morning and smaller meetings taking place at the beginning of each day before the work starts. These meetings give us direction for the day/week but also give us the time and the space to review each others performance. We will meet monthly one-on-one with the steward to review their strengths and identify areas in which we expect them to improve upon. We have keep detailed data on how long it should take to accomplish common tasks and we will teach a quality standard that we expect the steward to live up too.

8. Additional Phase Remarks (optional)

1. Describe the Trainee/Steward’s role for this phase

The lessons around planting, seeding, weeding, harvest and processing that the steward learned in the first phase will now be put in to practice. This is the time of year when the steward will have the most hands on experience and will build their skill level. They will come to understand the flow of the farm and the weekly routine which bounces back in forth between planting, harvesting and selling.

2. Specific goals and objectives for this phase

We expect that during this phase the steward will be able to comfortably understand how to prepare and fertilize beds, install drip irrigation systems, plant and seed a variety of different vegetable, fruit and flower crops and harvest in a manner that is efficient and of high quality.

We will teach pre-emergence flame weeding, how to manage newly planted/seeded crops and we will teach them about plant nutrition and how to use a fertilizer injector. They will also learn how to trellis and prune a variety of different crops and how to harvest in the most efficient manner.

1. Describe the Trainee/Steward’s role for this phase

In addition to the role developed in the second phase the steward will now be expected to assist the supervisors in the large fall planting that will sustain our farm throughout the winter. This planting period is unique in that we plant very heat sensitive crops during a hot period of the year and then have to provide them with the protection they need to mature as the seasons change and the climate cools. The steward will continue to plant, harvest and sell but now will have the responsibility of observing and managing the temperature inside our greenhouses and low tunnels. The steward will also begin to take on more of a leadership role in the marketing department during this phase. We will expect them to take more responsability and show leadership in our farm stand and farmers markets (with our support of course) and if they desire we can include them in our wholesale sales and delivery effort.

2. Specific goals and objectives for this phase

Orient the steward with our season extension practices. Continue to refine their field skills. Introduce them to our marketing plan and include them in retail and wholesale sales efforts.
