1. Describe the Trainee/Steward’s role for this phase

The role of the Trainee for this phase will be to assist with operations while receiving a basic operations orientation and becoming acquainted with other farm personnel.

2. Specific goals and objectives for this phase

To become familiar with the values, goals, schedules and routines of the Empower School & Farm Program.

3. Primary Supervisor’s qualifications

The Supervisor has managed the Empower Farm operations during the last 9 years.

4. What plans are in place for the Trainee/Steward to participate in cultural activities while in the United States?

The Trainee will participate in partnership activities with local civic, religious, educational and government agencies.

5. Specific knowledge, skills, or techniques to be learned during this phase?

The Trainee will gain a general knowledge of sustainable micro-intensive farm systems and techniques.

6. How specifically will this knowledge, skills, or techniques be taught? Include methodology of training and chronology/syllabus.

The trainee will participate in an educational program that includes classes, farm tours, and discussion led by expert farmers, Empower Farm staff, and agricultural professionals. The Trainee can expect a variety of approaches to learning, from traditional classroom settings to experiential on-farm settings.

7. How will the Trainee/Steward’s acquisition of new skills and competencies be measured?

The Trainee will maintain a journal and make weekly submissions to their Supervisor. The Supervisor will facilitate formal in-person evaluation sessions with the Trainee.

The goals are continued knowledge acquisition and taking on specific delegated responsibilities.

The Trainee will participate in partnership activities with local civic, religious, educational and government agencies.

5. Specific knowledge, skills, or techniques to be learned during this phase?

The specific skills, knowledge and techniques to be learned will be: Conservation Agriculture; Greenhouse/Propagation; Cultivation/Weed Management; Irrigation Systems; Entomology/Integrated Pest Management; Post-harvest Handling/Food Safety; Tractors/Equipment; Cover Crops/Crop Rotation; Season Extension; Basic Animal Husbandry and Introduction to Farm Business.

1. Describe the Trainee/Steward’s role for this phase

The Trainee will be responsible for the supervision of farm operations and farm interns.

2. Specific goals and objectives for this phase

The specific goals and objectives of this phase will be to develop strong leadership, organizational and communication skills.

3. Primary Supervisor’s qualifications

The Supervisor has managed the farm internship program during the last 7 years.

4. What plans are in place for the Trainee/Steward to participate in cultural activities while in the United States?

The trainee will help with the recruitment of farm interns through different social networks. This may include some travel to different events for making presentations and networking.

5. Specific knowledge, skills, or techniques to be learned during this phase?

The Trainee will learn planning, time & resource management, communication and conflict resolution skills.

6. How specifically will this knowledge, skills, or techniques be taught? Include methodology of training and chronology/syllabus.

Along with the daily routines of supervising farm interns, the Trainee will be given leadership development reading assignments, research projects and opportunity to participate in seminars and conferences.

7. How will the Trainee/Steward’s acquisition of new skills and competencies be measured?

There will be ongoing assessments of the Trainees leadership skill development.
The trainee will complete an independent project during the course of the farming season and will make a short presentation and submit a final report on their project.

Roles & Responsibilities:
Farm Management:
• Responsible for the daily planning, organization, supervision and administration of activities on farm.
• Overseeing the maintenance and acquisitions of farm equipment, crops and agricultural products, and livestock.
• Handling and maintaining farm related paperwork and administrative record related to planting, harvesting, and distribution.
• Provide training, instruction, and supervision for all farm workers including interns, student work duties and volunteers including scheduling and evaluation feedback.
• Ensuring compliance with local regulations and health and safety standards.
• Keeping an up-to-date knowledge of pests and diseases.
• Ensuring that the farm is produces income and meets projected financial targets
Intern & Program Development:
• Develop and implement strategies maximizing synergy between the farm, school, business and ministry areas.
• Serve as a mentor to farm interns providing both farm training and spiritual guidance as needed.
• Overseeing project supervision and management.
Property & Facility Oversight:
• Ensure upkeep of Empower property, farm, gardens, and grounds are maintained at safe and aesthetically pleasing level.
• Organizing maintenance/repair of farm and facility property, equipment and machinery as needed.
• Oversee management of community pantry and kitchen.
• Other duties as assigned.
