1. Describe the Trainee/Steward’s role for this phase

Trainee will perform general farming duties including seeding, planting, cultivating, harvesting, pack-out, etc. on a wide variety of crops.

2. Specific goals and objectives for this phase

Orient trainees to farm and multi-stakeholder cooperative structure; integrate with farm crew; familiarize with crop plan and our practices; evaluate skills and language barriers and pair with appropriate partners from farm team. Evaluate areas for improvement.

3. Primary Supervisor’s qualifications

Ann is an experienced educator and master gardener who will supervise the trainee’s overall integration with the farm. Day-to-day supervision will be performed by Our Table Cooperative’s Farm Manager, Karen Hicks.

4. What plans are in place for the Trainee/Steward to participate in cultural activities while in the United States?

Located within 15 miles of major metropolitan area with plenty of cultural opportunities. Paired with local farm crew members for social interaction and integration.

5. Specific knowledge, skills, or techniques to be learned during this phase?

Cooperative structures, basic organic farming techniques and skills – planting, cultivation, harvest, pack out, irrigation.

6. How specifically will this knowledge, skills, or techniques be taught? Include methodology of training and chronology/syllabus.

Hands-on on-the-job training by experienced farmers as well as primary supervisor.

7. How will the Trainee/Steward’s acquisition of new skills and competencies be measured?

Formal written review process by peers and supervisor at the end of first 2.5 months to evaluate trainee’s new skills and competencies and identify areas that need improvement.

1. Describe the Trainee/Steward’s role for this phase

Trainee will continue to perform general farming duties including seeding, planting, cultivating, harvesting, pack-out, etc. on a wide variety of crops while honing skills with a focus on areas identified in the phase 1 review. Trainee will also work in the on-site farm store and/or commercial kitchen to gain knowledge and experience of the retail and value-added-production aspects of the local food system.

2. Specific goals and objectives for this phase

Build on knowledge gained during phase 1. Introduction to value-added-production and food retail depending on trainees qualifications and interests. Opportunity to interact with customers to understand the true impact of growing and selling food on communities. Attend National Biodynamic Conference in November, Oregon Biodynamic Group prep making day, and help with biodynamic certification plan for the farm.

1. Describe the Trainee/Steward’s role for this phase

Trainee will continue to perform general farming with a focus on winter farming in the Pacific Northwest in hoop houses and outdoors. In addition, trainee will learn about all aspects of crop-planning for an organic mixed vegetable farm with an emphasis on crop rotation and long-term soil health. The planning process will incorporates customer feedback and prior season experience/records.

2. Specific goals and objectives for this phase

Build on knowledge gained during phases 1&2 and incorporate these into the 2019 crop plan for the farm. Learn about winter farming techniques.

Ann is an experienced educator and master gardener who will supervise the trainee’s overall integration with the farm. Day-to-day supervision will be performed by Our Table Cooperative’s Farm Manager, Karen Hicks.

Trainee will continue to perform general vegetable farming with a focus on seed starting and spring planting.

2. Specific goals and objectives for this phase

Build on knowledge gained during phases 1-3 as well as the crop-planning process during phase 3 to take on more of a leadership role around seed starting and spring planting. Hone leadership skills.

3. Primary Supervisor’s qualifications

Ann is an experienced educator and master gardener who will supervise the trainee’s overall integration with the farm. Day-to-day supervision will be performed by Our Table Cooperative’s Farm Manager, Karen Hicks.

4. What plans are in place for the Trainee/Steward to participate in cultural activities while in the United States?

Located within 15 miles of major metropolitan area with plenty of cultural opportunities. Paired with local farm crew members for social interaction and integration.

Seed starting (greenhouse techniques), spring planting, shoulder-season farming.
