1. Describe the Trainee/Steward’s role for this phase

In this phase the Steward will become familiar with our operation, first through shadowing us and our employees and, once comfortable, through working alongside us and receiving feedback from us.

2. Specific goals and objectives for this phase

To become familiar with our land, animals, crops, climate, and business as well as our pasture rotation techniques and irrigation practices.

3. Primary Supervisor’s qualifications

Ken Muller – 13 years farming experience.
Susan Muller – 9 years farming experience

4. What plans are in place for the Trainee/Steward to participate in cultural activities while in the United States?

We go to a San Francisco farmers’ market weekly, so the Steward will get a chance to see that city. Our valley has two big yearly festivals – the Almond Festival and the Hoes Down. Steward will be included in most all activities we participate in, including family gatherings and holidays if he or she desires.

5. Specific knowledge, skills, or techniques to be learned during this phase?

Cow milking, moving chicken houses and fences, moving cows and sheep to new pasture, processing of eggs in a sanitary manner, driving an ATV and tractor, irrigating.

6. How specifically will this knowledge, skills, or techniques be taught? Include methodology of training and chronology/syllabus.

Oral instruction, followed by shadowing of instructor, then working alongside instructor with immediate feedback, and, finally, working alone but with frequent instructor check-ins and quick feedback.

7. How will the Trainee/Steward’s acquisition of new skills and competencies be measured?

Trainee will be working alongside us and receiving oral feedback. During this first period we have a weekly review to discuss how the trainee is progressing and feeling, areas of progress, challenges, etc.

1. Describe the Trainee/Steward’s role for this phase

In this phase the steward will perform most basic daily tasks on their own without supervision and will be exposed to more advanced techniques and concepts.

2. Specific goals and objectives for this phase

The steward will become more familiar with our basic daily chores introduced during phase 1 as well as learn new skills such as butchering chickens, planting, and farm construction techniques.

4. What plans are in place for the Trainee/Steward to participate in cultural activities while in the United States?

Chicken butchering, hay-making (use of swather, rakes, baler), selling at farmers’ markets, planting (use of traditional and no-till drill), and irrigation techniques.

6. How specifically will this knowledge, skills, or techniques be taught? Include methodology of training and chronology/syllabus.

Trainee will learn by working alongside us and eventually completing the task by him/herself without supervision.

7. How will the Trainee/Steward’s acquisition of new skills and competencies be measured?

During this phase trainee will receive daily feedback on performance and will have a monthly review to discuss progress, challenges, opportunities, and problems, etc.

1. Describe the Trainee/Steward’s role for this phase

During this phase the steward will be given more leeway to perform tasks along their own timeline and in their own manner, while still receiving consultation and supervision daily. The steward will also be more involved with marketing and planning.

2. Specific goals and objectives for this phase

Planning pasture and crop rotation and planting schedules. Farm construction techniques. Tractor operation, tillage, and planting. Machinery repair and maintenance.

Susan Muller – 9 years farming experience

4. What plans are in place for the Trainee/Steward to participate in cultural activities while in the United States?

Steward will be included in most all activities we participate in, including family gatherings and holidays if he or she desires.

Planning pasture and crop rotation and planting schedule. Tractor operation and use of groundwork implements – disc, ripper, landplane, springtooth harrow. Farm construction techniques – use of torch and welder. Machinery repair and maintenance.

6. How specifically will this knowledge, skills, or techniques be taught? Include methodology of training and chronology/syllabus.

Trainee will complete more tasks on his/her own and be encouraged to take initiative and solve problems.

7. How will the Trainee/Steward’s acquisition of new skills and competencies be measured?

During this phase the trainee will continue to have daily supervision and monthly reviews.
