1. Describe the Trainee/Steward’s role for this phase

Gaston will participate in the establishment of organic vegetable crops. In this training period we will prepare fields for planting, seed transplants in the greenhouse and transplant our seedlings to the field.

2. Specific goals and objectives for this phase

Gaston will learn the fundamentals of these three areas of crop establishment. He will be able to use basic farm equipment for secondary field preparation; he will be able to tend to the crop propagation greenhouse and sow crops for transplant; and he will learn to use the mechanical transplanter.

3. Primary Supervisor’s qualifications

12 years farm experience; 9 years ownership of farm

4. What plans are in place for the Trainee/Steward to participate in cultural activities while in the United States?

Gaston will enjoy group gatherings with our local farming community and participate in seasonal holiday activities. We will also visit Washington, DC.

5. Specific knowledge, skills, or techniques to be learned during this phase?

Crop establishment and care/harvest

6. How specifically will this knowledge, skills, or techniques be taught? Include methodology of training and chronology/syllabus.

-Gaston will work under George in the greenhouses to sow, plant and care for greenhouse transplants and crops.
-Gaston will learn to transplant the crops to the field using a mechanical transplanter.
-Gaston will learn the fundamentals of crop care during this period. He will help execute the cultural practices that are required for each crop.
-Depending on skill set, he will aid in field preparation.
-He will aid in irrigation installation and its use.
-He will begin to harvest crops.

7. How will the Trainee/Steward’s acquisition of new skills and competencies be measured?

Gaston’s competency will be measured directly by George, who has much experience training people in the field.

Gaston will learn the techniques and skills of harvest and packing produce.

During this phase we will enjoy holiday activities together and travel to farmers’ market.

Harvest

-Gaston will work closely with George to learn to harvest summer crops such as tomatoes and summer squash.
-Gaston will work with a crew of harvesters to maintain summer harvest
-Gaston will work with George to learn the fundamentals of crop maintenance during this period
-Gaston will aid in the establishment of fall crops

1. Describe the Trainee/Steward’s role for this phase

Gaston will learn how to harvest and store fall crops. He will learn cover cropping techniques to protect the soil while it is resting and to increase soil fertility.

2. Specific goals and objectives for this phase

Gaston will learn proficiency in cover crop establishment and fall crop harvest.

3. Primary Supervisor’s qualifications

12 years farm experience; 9 years ownership of farm

4. What plans are in place for the Trainee/Steward to participate in cultural activities while in the United States?

In the fall we will hike, host a farm gathering, celebrate halloween and visit NYC.

5. Specific knowledge, skills, or techniques to be learned during this phase?

Gaston will learn proficiency in cover crop establishment and fall crop harvest.

6. How specifically will this knowledge, skills, or techniques be taught? Include methodology of training and chronology/syllabus.

-Gaston will work with George and harvest crew to bring in the fall harvest
-He will work with George and packhouse crew to properly handle and store fall crops
-He will work with George to renovate cropped fields and establish cover crops.
