Orientation to the farm

Become familiar with setup, structure, people and expectations on the farm

3. Primary Supervisor’s qualifications

Stewards are directly supervised by the owners Harry or Jackie Hoch. Harry and Jackie are on the farm full time and available to the stewards at all times.

4. What plans are in place for the Trainee/Steward to participate in cultural activities while in the United States?

We try to attend three summer tours or field days on other local farms. LaCrosse Riverfest( 4th of July) LaCrosse Oktoberfest and LaCrescent Apple Festival. Local music events and sports. Our crew often participates in a five kilometer run in LaCrescent.

5. Specific knowledge, skills, or techniques to be learned during this phase?

General farm overview

6. How specifically will this knowledge, skills, or techniques be taught? Include methodology of training and chronology/syllabus.

One on one meeting with staff and intro to the work and day to day operation of the farm

7. How will the Trainee/Steward’s acquisition of new skills and competencies be measured?

We try to have a formal meeting one-on-one with each steward around mid season before apple harvest begins. Stewards are directly supervised by the owners Harry or Jackie Hoch. Harry and Jackie are on the farm full time and available to the stewards at all times.

Focus on Harvest, packing and Distribution of fruit on the farm. Observe and help with the apple harvest, packing, marketing and distribution. On farm sales and events, working with a small distributor

Learn about different avenues of distribution
Learn about fruit quality standards for wholesale distribution
