About the Placement:
Detailed Placement Description
We are a married couple operating a small farm of 67 acres. The property is certified organic, except for 23 acres in transition which will be certified in March of 2024. Our livestock are certified organic, well cared for, and Animal Welfare Approved. We farm using biodynamic principles, rotating livestock on targeted pastures year-round. We cultivate market vegetables across 4 acres each year, rotating growing areas across the 7-acre garden area for nutrient regeneration. We start vegetables from seed in the greenhouse and utilize a high tunnel to extend the growing season. We market our products to supermarkets, restaurants, and farm-direct. Occasionally we participate in farmers markets. Three dogs and one cat come and go between the outside and in the house.
We have a small fruit tree orchard and productive berry patches. There are bird-watching and nearby hiking opportunities. We offer peaceful and quiet rural living, fresh air, and fresh healthy food. We make every attempt to consume the food we produce. There may be volunteers from the WWOOF program at the same time.
Primary Production :
Berries, Goats, Herbs, Poultry, Sheep, Tree fruits, Vegetables
About the Internship:
Training Hours:
40 hours/week
Training Expectations :
You will be supervised by and work alongside farm owners (1 female and 1 male). We expect the Steward to accept job duty assignments and educational instruction from both of the farm owners. We expect conscientious and respectful cooperation while you live in our home. You can expect various duties including caring for the livestock, planting, cultivating, and harvesting garden produce, fruits, and berries. We expect a focus on livestock welfare and respect for all the property (i.e., equipment including hand tools and vehicles). Most importantly, we expect the Steward to have a passion for farming and learning. During the peak of the growing season, the owners work long days, 7 days a week. While they do not expect the Steward to work those long hours, they will be expected to work until the job is completed or at a reasonable stopping place and not just look at their watch and stop working because it’s 5 pm.
On-Site Training, Steward’s primary activities :
Animal husbandry, seed starting, seedling transplanting (aka up potting), cultivating, harvesting, weed management, plant nutrition, fruit orchard care, grazing pasture management and maintenance, pasture fence installation and repair, building and equipment maintenance and repair, irrigation management, and food processing
Climate and Location Description
Sublimity is a very small town located in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. Sublimity is primarily a farming community, and it was well as the nearest town, Stayton, is within easy bicycling distance. Salem, the state capitol is about 15 miles west. The valley sits between the low-elevation Coast range to the west and the dramatic Cascade range to the east. Winter weather systems become trapped in the valley and rain systems stall out for weeks at a time, dumping rain from November through March, which is why the vegetation in this area is so lush. Summers are mostly clear skies and beautiful, but sometimes it can be very hot. Usually, the very hot temperatures occur for a short time. The ocean beaches are dramatic and beautiful.
Compensation :
Private room in our home. Shared bathrooms (2). Laundry facility, shared kitchen, living room, dining room, Free, daily food, On the Job experience with farmers, Free webinars approximately 1 time/week with USDA, FACT, Friends of Family Farmers, Rodale Institute, etc.., other farms of many types nearby
Accommodations and amenities provided :
Private room in our home with either a private or shared bathroom (depending on whomever else is living in the house), access to shared living space (living room, dining room, etc.) internet, wifi, use of bicycle, and depending on Steward’s capabilities, use of a vehicle with property licensing.
