About the Placement:
Detailed Placement Description
Slide Ranch is a special spot along the CA coast just 35 min drive from San Francisco. Close to a major metro area, but feels very remote and rustic. We’re at the bas of Mt Tamalpais, on federal land, the GGNRA. We are an educational farm, have been around for 52 years. We have a residential community of people who live and work on the ranch, including our Executive Director, animal care manager, garden manager and outdoor instructors (5-6 at a time). We have goats, sheep, chicken and ducks and an organic garden. The ranch is here to support educational programs. We have school and community groups who come Tues-Friday and family farm days and campouts on some Saturdays. In the summer, we have Slide Ranch summer camp, a local and loved day camp for kids.
Primary Production :
Farm Education & Community, Goats
About the Internship:
Training Hours:
32-40
Training Expectations :
The steward will be trained in animal husbandry as well as organic farming. We have full time animal care manager and garden care manager who will provide the training. For a steward interested in farm education and youth, we can train them as a farm instructor to guide groups around the farm and engage in our educational programming. Each steward will have a supervisor depending on which area they’d like to focus. Weekly schedule is roughly starting work around 8 (earlier if on farm chore- feeding animals around 7:40). Groups arrive between 9:30-10:00am and the program lasts until 1:30/2:30. Program clean up happens in the afternoon and the work day ends around 4/4:30.
On-Site Training, Steward’s primary activities :
Milking and caring for goats. Feeding sheep. How to care for a barnyard. How to pasture graze. Caring for chickens and ducks. Learning about our organic garden where we grow food and plants for our educational programs and also for our residential community who eats all fresh produce from the garden. Being trained as a Slide Ranch instructor or guide if the steward would like to play a role in our programming and/or work more directly with the youth and people of all ages and backgrounds who come to Slide Ranch.
